On 11 October last year, I posted my introduction to the Czernowitz.ehpes group. I was very pleased to be contacted by family members in the USA who are also researching our history in Czernowitz.
We are all descendants of Berta Oling who died in 1926 and is buried in Czernowitz. Berta had a daughter, also named Berta, who married Samuel/Max Fischmann. Berta and Max had two daughters: Lina and Kamilla, known as Mitzi (born 1909). Lina immigrated with her husband, Leon Moldauer, to Central America. It is Lina's grandson who read my introduction and contacted me.
Berta, Max and Mitzi perished in Transnistria. I have found all three Fischmann names in Hugo Gold's Memorial Tablet for the Bukowinian Martyrs.
I am trying to find out what documentation exists to support the Memorial Tablet. Are there transport lists, burial lists or any other information?
I read on-line that the USHMM has a list of 26 lists for Czernowitz, largely from the Czernowitz Oblast Archives and many to do with deportation. However, it does not seem possible to search these lists on-line. Does anyone know how to access them, apart from visiting the USHMM?
I looked at the Yad Vashem site but it did not seem to have what we are looking for.
I looked at the .ehpes booklist but, again, there does not seem to be anything that would contain lists of individuals and their fate.
I think I searched everything else on the Czernowitz.ehpes website but have not found the Fischmann names in any of the lists.
We will eventually search the archives of Bad Arolsen International Tracing Service when more information comes on-line.
Ultimately, we would like to know when and where Berta, Max and Mitzi died and where they might be buried. Does anyone know or have lists or have suggestions that would help us to find when and where the family died and where their bodies might lie?
Thank you for any suggestions you can offer.
