thank you for providing all this detailed information and thank you for the link to this interesting document too. In the meantime I'm fully convinced that you were right from the beginning on. What we see are traces of a bracket that was designed to hold something, probably a copy of the Elisabeth medal. This is what I wrote to the list as well.
