Dear Christian,

I have no information on Pepi Almogen's cofession except the picture
of the stone, but the latter clearly indicates that she was Jewish. A
traditional Hebrew inscription is both necessary and sufficient
evidence for this. In addition, her Jewish name, Peysil (a female
version of the Yiddish male name Peysakh) makes it abundantly clear
that she was born Jewish, because had she converted (the probability
for this in that place and time is indistinguishable from zero anyway,
but purely hypothetically) she would likely be given a Hebrew rather
than a Yiddish name.

Another piece of information: David Almogen (assuming he was Pepi's
husband - and I think it is almost certain) was active in Jewish
causes and wrote an interesting polemic against an anonymous
antisemitic treatise. The full text of his brochure is available
online from the Frankfurt university library:

Best,
Iosif
