As I already wrote before, in 1940 my father who held an executive position
in the poultry processing plant in Nouasulitsa was classified by the Soviets
under paragraph 39 which put him danger of being deported to Siberia. We
went into hiding and ironically enough were saved by the Nazi invasion (but
what didn't save us from being deported to Transnistria). When we were
liberated by the the Soviets in 1944 and returned to Czernowitz my father
was asked (you my say even implored) by the authorities to restart the plant
that was idle throughout the war. Considering the grave food shortage that
prevailed at that time the output of the plant had a great impact on the
improvement of the situation. Regardless of that, one night in December 1944
the EN KA VE DE (secret Police) knocked on our door and arrested my father
under the old charge of paragraph 39. It took many efforts to find out where
they kept my father, and a big bribe to release him for 24 hours which
coincided with 1945 New Year's Eve, and which we used to illegally cross the
border to Romania. At that time were others that didn't escape the
deportation in 1944 and especially in 1945. I'm sorry to state that among
the Soviet authorities at that time were a number of local Jews.
