Cornel,
Yes, there are a few Jews there. Unfortunately, my aunt and my cousin still
live there. They miss the Soviet times. Many people miss them too.
It's just a very sad place. And still a beautiful place too.
Yes, I would like to visit my relatives' grave more often but the journey
there is too uncomfortable, not to mention too dangerous.
Do you know that they lock the airport's gates with a big, rusty lock every
night? Have you seen their ancient planes about to fall apart? I played the
Russian Roulette and took one to Kiev. I am not looking forward to my next
trip.
Hardy,
In the 60s my mother's aunt from Haifa (who managed to escape from CH. in
1945) was allowed to visit us. She was impressed by our life standards. We
lived in nice Czernowits apartments, went on long holidays and attended
concerts. Everyone was educated, almost every one in my mother's family
studied medicine and became doctors. Many were engaged in dangerous
"gescheftn" or illegal busnesses.
Jews are very resilient and resourceful people. True, the freedom was very
limited.
I wish I was born somewhere else but, as I already mentioned, my father's
family was deported to Siberia in 1941and the suvivors were allowed to
return only in 1948, when the border was already locked for another 20
years. I would've never been born if they left as I was born in 1954!
Serah
