I have to strongly disagree with any glorification of Soviet times. When
you had to hide from your neighbors if you listened to Western radio, when
to travel within the country you needed a "komandirovka", when travel abroad
was an impossible dream, can you compare this to the benevolent K. u. K.
Monarchie ? Even during Romanian times, because of antisemitism, those who
had the means could study in Vienna, Prague or Paris, (in the twenties Berlin
as well) to escape Romanian numerus clausus etc. Maybe there were
advantages of relatively good schools, but you had to study marxism-leninism, and
history was distorted to conform to the rules emanating from Moscow.
And lastly this here List (at least in my understanding), is an exercise
in nostalgia about a world, we all iretreavably lost.
