the Jewish population of Chernovtsy region (up to 90% of those in
Chernovtsy proper) according to the Soviet and Ukrainian (2001)
censuses (in thousands):
1959 - 42.1
1970 - 37.5
1979 - 22.3
1989 - 16.5
2001 - 1.4
60-70k number may refer only to a short period in 1945-46, at any
later point it is definitely an exaggeration.
