Dear Czernowitzers,

I'm planning to spend about a month or more in CZ this summer, working
on a sequel to my "Return" project of the 1990s - a photographic work
about memory, identity and roots that encompassed several train
journeys through post communist Eastern Europe that eventually led me
back to my native city Cz.

This new phase of the work is being sponsored by the (U.S.) Society
for Photographic Education and endorsed by the Jewish Museum in
Chernivtsi who are helping me organize my stay. To reciprocate their
help I will be conducting a photo workshop for young people to
document Jewish sites around the city which will eventually be
exhibited at the museum.

The inspiration for this sequel has come partly through all of you -
reading your posts and stories that have helped fill in gaps in my
knowledge of my own history and helped corroborate vague memories -
also coming back to CZ in 2008 on my way to Russia for the 600
Anniversary celebrations where I met Cornel Fleming, Charles Rosner,
Cora Schwartz, Zoya Danilovic and subsequently also Christian Herrmann
in Cologne, and MImi Taylor in Ithaca, NY - all with strong
connections to the city and its past and present culture.

I have scheduled my stay to coincide with the Summer Work Camps - plus
all and any of you who are planning to be there this summer. At one
point earlier last year I had seen some posts about a reunion that was
being planned which I was very much hoping to attend, but have not
been able to find out more about it. My intent is on the one had to
show the diverse group of people who have been coming each year to
help clear the cemetery - who they are, what their motivation might
be...and to do a series of portraits of any Czernowitzers &/or
descendants, contextualizing them in the context of their past
---either holding a photo of themselves at an earlier age or of the
family that once lived here or before the house where you once lived
or place or object of personal significance.

I wanted to show you a couple of examples of what I mean by attaching two
photos - one of Charles Rosner holding his book "Emancipation" at
the Jewish Museum in 2008. The other of my friend Dorothy Riester
(a lifelong artist, having nothing to do with CZ) at age 92, holding a
photo of herself at 22 ....but the system says "no attachments"

In order to fix the dates of my trip, make arrangements for
accommodations and allow the Jewish Museum time to organize that photo
workshop, I need to know the exact dates of the Summer Work Camps and
who of you are planning be there this summer and when.
