PS. Just to clear things a bit. As I said Yiddish started as pure medieval
German. The German Jews then added words from Hebrew and Aramaic, and as they
moved east added more words from Slavic etc. Moreover the Yiddish itself
changed...Litvaks,Czernowitzers,Polish and Russian Jews had different
pronunciations and in some cases different meanings for the same original
words. Cornel

Thank you Paul,
I personally know German graduate students who study Yiddish,
but this is not what I meant. What I did mean is that I object to the
term
Judendeutsch. Yiddish is an old language, built on old German, Hebrew,
Aramaic and Slavic words, with recent additions of general
international terminology
and modern Hebrew words for new technologies.
I am currently attending a conference on Yiddish ethnography,
some of the lectures are given in Yiddish and today one lecturer
speaking in Yiddish
called a computer "machshev", The speaker is not an Israeli.
If Yiddish is to be called "Judendeutsch", English should be called
"English-French".
