During all my years in Washington DC, I was told time and again that the
major factor for not bombing Auschwitz was, in fact, the anti-Semitism at
the State Department. There was no shortage of planes, it was just an
excuse "invented" after the war was over. I heard this from several people
who did a great deal of research on this subject.
