The following message was posted today on JewishGen. This tragedy is
documented
in the book that I described yesterday - "None is Too Many" and is not news,
but as we are discussing the deplorable stances of both the USA and Canada
during the Holocaust, I feel that it is important to list it at this time:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
"The story of the St.Louis is well known in Canada. The ship set sail
from Hamburg on May 15, 1939 with 907 German Jewish passengers aboard bound
for Cuba. The Cuban government refused to recognize their entry visas.
They were subsequently refused entry by Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and
Panama. The American Coast Guard ensured that the ship was kept away from
the shores of the United States. Canada was their last hope and in spite of
the entreaties of a number of influential Canadians, the government of the
day, refused them entry. The St. Louis returned to Europe where many of the
Jewish passengers subsequently were swallowed up by the Holocaust.

"For those who many not be familiar with it - a book written by Irving Abella
and Harold Troper entitled "None is Too Many" recounts the dreadful record
of Canada's refusal to accept European Jews as immigrants during the period
1933-1948. This book, published in 1983, is being reissued and is being
celebrated in the Canadian Parliament in recognition of having influenced
Canadian government policy toward subsequent groups of refugees seeking
refuge in Canada in a much more positive and generous manner."
