Dear Mimi and Christian,
Christian is right, it is Stanivtsi in Ukrainian, but not the one in
Christian's map. The villages in question are currently called Verkhni
Stanivtsi (Stăneşti de Sus) and Nizhni Stanivtsi (Stăneşti de Jos).
The map is at http://goo.gl/maps/z1T4g
Three of the perpetrators of the massacre in July 1941 were arrested
in 1976 (sic!) and tried in Chernovtsy. All three were convicted of a
capital offence, two of them were executed, the third, who was a minor
in 1941, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term (I think 15 years).
