Another possibility is as we have now in London too...a room in an ordinary
house becomes a "Stibl" for a likeminded group. As an aside....when a few
years ago I took my family to Wien we stayed in the Hotel Domizil, behind the
Stephansdom. And when we opened the blind we were looking into exactly such
a "stibl" in the building opposite! A Bima, black hats and all!!! Cornel

Subject: Re: [Cz-L] The Lost Synagogues of Czernowitz
Hello Christian,
Thanks for researching Czernowitz, but you may have set yourself
an unattainable goal. I very much doubt that Czernowitz at anyone time
was home to 60 synagogues. If we assume that some synagogues
were destroyed or abandoned and others were built to take their place,
it is possible that over a span of 2 years; from 1775 till now,
there might have been a total of 25 prayer houses and synagogues,
but not all functioning at the same time.
Had 60 synagogues or prayer houses been built in Czernowitz between
1775 and 1940, they would have had to build one new prayer house
or synagogue, more frequently than one every three years.
Wir Czernowitzer leben gerne auf großen Fuß und wir sind gerne grandios
aber wir waren weder so religiös, noch so reich um ein neues Gebethaus
jede drei Jahre zu bauen.
All the best,
Mimi
