If it was so in the USA imagine what the numbers were in Eastern Europe.
Everyone who is familiar with the Jewish life in those places can asses that
the number of 60 praying places in a place like Czernowitz is very much
UNDERESTIMATED.

I came from Chelsea, Massachusetts, which at its heyday in the 1930s had
50,000 people and probably 20,000 Jews. It had 30 synagogues all active at
the same time. A minyan was frequently sufficient to create a new synagogue
from one shtetl :-)
