Hello friends,
Have not been too well lately and I am as usual, late in answering. But
I'd like to answer this one. My father, Edwin Richard Gold, Otto
Preminger and Erwin Chargaff were of the same age (my father born 1905),
he used to tell us about Otto with whom he attended the same school and
about the schoolboy pranks they used to make. Then Preminger with his
family left Czernowitz for Vienna and that was the end of the story.
With Erwin Chargaff, it was a lifelong friendship, they studied in
Vienna at the same time, my father medicine and Erwin chemistry. Both
worked for a short time in Switzerland, Erwin left Europe quite early
and Edwin returned to Czernowitz where his widowed mother lived, not
reading the signs of time.
But they kept their friendship going through correspondence. We have
most of his books and some letters.
When my father became quite ill, Erwin came to Berlin to see him and to
say good-bye, he was already an old man, but still very lively and they
had a long
conversation.
As to Bernhard Reder, he made the tomb for the Gold family - it is the
first tomb on the left at the entrance of the cemetery in Czernowitz,
black granite, signed by him. We still have 3 of his early wood engravings.
