English translation:

Among the most important historical memorials of the Jewish community of
Czernowitz belongs a large Jewish graveyard (over 50 000 gravesites,)
which was planned and built in the 60ies of the 19th century and which
to this day, lies there like an open book of Jewish history. And it wants
(needs) to be read. "Everything is as it was, completely untouched,
unchanged and as if enchanted... Grave follows grave, paths cross and allow
an open view. One could spend days, weeks, in order to see everything and
internalize everything." That is how Othmar Andre describes his impressions
in "Czernowitzer Spaziergange".

In 1995, a Czernowitz magistrate declared all Christian and Jewish
cemeteries to be protected as monuments. They make an effort to save these
memorial sites for posterity. Such civic efforts are supported by private
and public initiatives abroad. In 1995-97, the cemetery administration was
supported by donations from the OSK. This because both on the Christian as
well as in the Jewish cemetery there are graves of Austrian and Russian
soldiers who fell in WW1. In June of 2000, with the initiative of the Rose
Ausslander foundation in Germany, the association "Patenschaft Jüdischer
Friedhof Czernowitz" came into being. This association wants to make
possible the renovation of the Jewish Cemetery.
