Dear Members of the Czernowitz-List:
I am searching for Mr. Alexander Ehrlich from Czernowitz and/or his
children.
Alexander Ehrlich, brother of Hilde Knappek, born Ehrlich, had moved from
Czernowitz to
France and later to Australia. His son, Alfred, had studied medicine in
England; his daughter, Paula, settled in Australia. I am also searching for
Eric Knappek, son of Hilde Ehrlich.
Does anybody know any member of this Ehrlich family? Does anybody have a
contact address? I would
appreciate your help. Thank you in advance.
Permit me to introduce myself: I am the author of the monograph "Paul Celan:
Holograms of Darkness" (Indiana University Press, 1991) and co-editor
(together with Alfred Kittner) of the annotated anthology of poetry
"Versunkene Dichtung der Bukowina: Eine Anthologie deutschsprachiger Lyrik"
(1994).
My articles on the literature and culture of the Bukowina include a recent
essay on Czernowitz in the "History of the Literary Cultures of East-Central
Europe," edited by Cornis-Pope, Marcel and John Neubauer and
published by John Benjamins Press in 2006.
As to my Czernowitz family connection:
My grandfather, Karl Horowitz, had a large private book collection in
Czernowitz; as a result, his home
became a gathering point for poets; his oldest daughter, Edith
Horowitz-Silbermann, is known for her recitals of Bukowina poetry, her book:
"Begegnung mit Paul Celan" published by the Rimbaud Verlag, and her numeorus
German adaptations of Romanian literature brought out by the Suhrkamp
Verlag. There is a family link to the Ehrlich family in Australia. Yet it is
for scholarly reasons that I am looking for this family.
Kind regards from Amy-Diana COLIN
