Czernowitzers....
Peter Elbau sent along this link which he thought might be of interest to
the group:
http://www.doew.at/
There's an English 'button' on the left side that gives a translation for
the site.
The site [was founded in 1963 by ex-resistance fighters and anti-Fascist
historians. DÖW is a foundation since 1983 and receives financial support
from the Austrian Government, the City of Vienna and the Verein
Dokumentationsarchiv.
Research themes: resistance and persecution (1934-1945), exile, Nazi
crimes (especially the Holocaust), right-wing extremism after 1945,
restitution...]
Now there exists on the site a database of 62,000 names of Austrian Jews
killed in the Holocaust which you should have a look at. I unexpectedly
found a 'Louis Schatten' whom I had been researching -- born in Czernowitz
in 1899, deported from Vienna to Lodz ghetto in 1941. Another piece of my
puzzle is now in place.
Lots of interesting materials, well worth a look, thanks to Peter! I'll be
including this link on the website.
Best,
jerome
