My family story is that my great-great grandfather ISRAEL/SRUL IKLER, born in the 1850s, had served in the Austrian-Hungarian army for 20 years so the government gave him several acres of land. He lived and farmed on them and then divided the land up so that each of his children inherited some when he/she wed. He lived in a small village near Czernowitz called Kabestie.
Does anyone know if it was a policy of the Austrian government to give land to people who had in its army?
