Fay is mistaken, the ghetto was not established till October 1941.
For us who lived in Czernowitz, then under Russian rule,
WW2 did not start till June 1941, when the Germans bombed
the Czernowitz airport. If Fay was deported in the summer,
it was in the summer of 1942. There were deportations then.
I remember hiding in the attic of the house in which we lived
and the attic being very warm, smelling of raw wood exposed to the sun
and heat.
As to the permits: A relatively large number of people
received Popovici authorizations, but these were declared void
and had to be exchanged for Calotescu authorizations.
In between leaving the ghetto and receiving Calotescu permits,
those of us who had Popovici authorizations, moved frequently,
hid wherever we could, bribed janitors and military personel
and the children often did not know where they were,
when the woke up in the morning. That is how I know
that there was a "Ratia" (round-up for purpose of deportation
to Transnistria) starting on the night of June 6 - 7, 1942.
I went to sleep in my own bed on June 6, looking forward
to the next day, which was my 5 year old birthday.
I woke up in a strange bed, in a strange apartment with strange,
but luckily very nice people. Possibly some of you,
are related to them. They were two sisters; Ella and Bella Weinstock,
who lived on the Strada Luta, very close to the northern edge of the
Volksgarten.
