Dear Czernowitzers,
This is a copy of the reply I sent some months ago to Mr. Kylynych,
Counsellor to the Mayor of Czernowitz to which to date I have not
received an answer:
"Dear Mr. Kylynych,
Thank you very much for your e-mail of today. You are perfectly right. I
am not acquainted with the detailed plan of the Jubilee Celebration
since your official webside is not a source of information about the
detailed plans and projects. You mention your efforts made in preparing
the Anniversary and your aim at most precise investigations regarding
the history and traditions of inter-ethnic and inter-religious tolerance.

Studying your website I noticed major omissions which have escaped your
attention. Since you talk about most precise investigations, I cannot
imagine a reasons why in your history of the city you simply skipped
huge periods of time as if they wouldn't have existed. Between 1905 and
1964 Czernowitz vanishes historically from the website. Further, Mikola
Fedoruk was not/not the first mayor in the history of the city elected
by its citizens. Many before him were democratically elected, etc.
By mentioning these two examples out of many, I would encourage you and
your investigation committee to re-investigate and complete with facts,
names and dates the major accomplishments achieved by Czernowitzers
during the whole 600-years history. If you don't manage to complete in
an objective way the image of Czernivtzy until its 600th anniversary,
future generations will correct the missing links and help history
regain its credibility.
As one source of information out of many, I send you again the internet
address: www.ehpes.com, or I recommend the works of different authors
available at
your university, as well as search machines in Internet to collect any
information of interest.
Sincerely yours,
Eduard Weissmann"
P.S. The activities developed by Maite Prout and N. Shevchenko as well
as the decision made to restore the Kornsche Schil in the Nikolausgasse
are very
positive and welcome. However, they didn't change the official policy of
the administration towards the history of Czernowitz. The planned
exhibition is exiled
in two rooms of the Jdisches Haus and does not correspond by any means
with the importance of the Jewish Community in the history of Czernowitz.
In my opinion real efforts should be made to make the Czernowitz
administration realize that the return of the Temple to the Jewish
community,
even in its present state, is a top priority. Many churches have been
returned to their respective confessions and communities, since a law
has been
passed quite a time ago.
