Dear friends of Czernowitz,
Edgar Hauster encouraged me to subscribe to Czernowitz-L.
I am a German writer and live in Heidelberg, Germany.
After a biography on the jewish poet Hilde Domin, two novels and one more book on Domin, I am working on the biography of Selma Meerbaum-Eisinger that is due to be published in 2014.I have read and read books on Czernowitz and reports of witnesses. All pieces of information will be put together to give a picture of Selma's life and the life in Czernowitz at that time.
It was Hilde Domin who brought Selma's poems to Germany in 1979. They had been handed over to her by Irene or Helene Silverblatt she must have met in the States. After Hilde Domin had returned to Germany she made a lot of efforts to find an editor for Selma's poems and finally convinced Jürgen Serke (journalist of the "Stern" magazine) to follow the terrific way the poems had taken before they reached Israel.
The Czernowitz-L web site is a fountain of inspiration and information, a wonderful gift.
I would be more than pleased if somebody could contribute any details on Selma Meerbaum-Eisinger: She was born in "Rapfgasse 6", later Str. Georghe Popovici. Enlisted in Rapfgasse 6 in the official register is a "Chaim Meerbaum" who used to live in Steingasse before, next to comerciant "Eisinger" - Leo Eisinger was to become Selma's stepfather after her father Max Meerbaum had passed away . Does anybody know anything about the relationship between "Chaim Meerbaum" and "Max Meerbaum", Selmas father? He came from Berlin to Czernowitz to open a business, that is what we had been told by his brother. So I think that Chaim must have been a close relative, maybe even his father, Selmas grandfather. Because the register tells me that Chaim improved from "Tagelöhner" to "comerciant" and lived in Rapfgasse until 1936.
Selmas mother, born Frieda Schrager, ran a small shop - a so called "Geißlerei" - in this very Rapfgasse. But I wonder if "Chaim Meerbaum" was there before her? Details I am interested in because they might help to understand the way Max Meerbaum and Frieda Schrager, Selma's mother, got together.
Maybe there exist even some photos of Rapfgasse in the 1920/30ies?
So far at the moment - any detail might be helpful and I thank you for having taken the time to read.
Kindest regards,
Marion Tauschwitz
