My late mother, Pearl Spiegel Fichman, was a Czernovitzer and very fond of =
Selma Meerbaum-Eisinger. My mother's book, Before Memory Fades, is availabl=
e on Amazon, in paperback and Kindle versions. Chapter 24 is entitled, "Sel=
ma and her Friends." Here is the first mention of Selma in the text:

"Selma Meerbaum-Eisinger, who lived not far from me, just a little closer t=
o the park, was one of the girls in the group. I often saw her with Ren=C3=
=A9e, Abrasha's girlfriend. Among the young men in the group was Leiser Fic=
hman, my husband's younger cousin. I remember Selma as a lively girl, short=
, with long, curly, dark brown hair, often in the company of girl friends. =
Her appearance was striking, a little sloppy, rather careless about her loo=
ks, as her brown hair was windblown. When walking alone, she looked preoccu=
pied, oblivious of the world around her. Leiser, or Leisiu, as she would ca=
ll him, was a quiet, serious, introverted youngster, very handsome, somehow=
 in the shadow of his older brother Arye and older cousin Yuda. When Selma =
and Leiser would walk together, they struck as contrasting types: he was ta=
ll, impeccably neat, all in control, while Selma seemed rather lost in thou=
ghts and impervious of appearance. They looked like different types of indi=
viduals, yet, she absolutely adored him."

It was Hilde Domin who brought Selma's poems to Germany in 1979. They had b=

handed over to her by Irene or Helene Silverblatt she must have met in the=

States. After Hilde Domin had returned to Germany she made a lot of efforts=
 to=20
find an editor for Selma's poems and finally convinced J=C3=BCrgen Serke (j=
ournalist=20
of the "Stern" magazine) to follow the terrific way the poems had taken bef=
ore=20
they reached Israel.

I would be more than pleased if somebody could contribute any details on Se=

Meerbaum-Eisinger: She was born in "Rapfgasse 6", later Str. Georghe Popovi=
ci.=20
Enlisted in Rapfgasse 6 in the official register is a "Chaim Meerbaum" who =
used=20
to live in Steingasse before, next to comerciant "Eisinger" - Leo Eisinger =
was=20
to become Selma's stepfather after her father Max Meerbaum had passed away =
.=20
Does anybody know anything about the relationship between "Chaim Meerbaum" =
and=20
"Max Meerbaum", Selmas father? He came from Berlin to Czernowitz to open a=
=20
business, that is what we had been told by his brother. So I think that Cha=
im=20
must have been a close relative, maybe even his father, Selmas grandfather.=
=20
Because the register tells me that Chaim improved from "Tagel=C3=B6hner" to=
=20
"comerciant" and lived in Rapfgasse until 1936.
Selmas mother, born Frieda Schrager, ran a small shop - a so called "Gei=C3=
=9Flerei"=20
- in this very Rapfgasse. But I wonder if "Chaim Meerbaum" was there before=
 her?=20
Details I am interested in because they might help to understand the way Ma=
x=20
Meerbaum and Frieda Schrager, Selma's mother, got together.=20
Maybe there exist even some photos of Rapfgasse in the 1920/30ies?
So far at the moment - any detail might be helpful and I thank you for havi=
ng=20
taken the time to read.
