Dear Hardy,

this is not a grave. This is a memorial next to the mass-grave at the Czernowitz cemetery. Set by somebody who wanted to commemorize his family. It lists up five persons. They are not buried there but somewhere in the mass-graves of Transnistria.

"Zugrundegegangen" can be translated with "perished", yes. But the meaning in German is even stronger; you know that of course. If one translates all parts of the word it says "gone to the ground". It tells about suffering with death at the end.

The "N" in the inscription are vice versa, like a cyrillic "I". Was there no stone carver left in Czernowitz in the post-war periode who grew up with German? Looks like that.
