The Weinstein petition.
The date is June 1945 ,Jerusalem, Mandatory Palestine.
The war in Europe is just one month over .
This was the bloodiest war in history so far.
Europe is in ashes, the Russians alone lost 20 million people.
Still looking for bodies in the rubbles of Berlin.
The winners plan for a meeting in Potsdam on how to divide Europe.
Western nations fear for a Soviet invasion of the rest of Europe.
In the Jerusalem High Commissioner Palace the daily post
delivers a letter from one Elias Weinstein , Jewish .
The secretery who usually reads petitions, complaints ,suggestions
cannot find her bearings.
Czernowitz, Bukovina ,Ukraina dont mean much to her.
She is from the Midlands somewhere near Worcester.
" 2000 Jews deported to Siberia , wrongly, since 1940,
small business owners , 4 years now ."
She thinks : What do they want - Churchill should speak with Stalin
on this matter before or after they divide Europe ?
2000 wrongly deported Jews from - how do they call this place ?
She will present it to the boss.

Czernowitzers...
Just three small remarks in addition to my own posting earlier today:
1. "Die Stimme" is wrong concerning the Czernowitz Ghetto; it started not on
11.10.1940, but on 12.10.1941.
2. "Die Stimme" is wrong - as Peter discovered - concerning Elias
Weinstein's place of birth; it's not Sereth, but Kamenka.
3. Beside the report on Elias Weinstein's aliyah, the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency reports (April 24, 1944) in the same context on the aliyah of two
prominent rabbis, the Munkaczer Rebbe and "our" Bukovinian Wisznitzer Rebbe.
Warmest wishes to all of you and thank you so much for your mails and
comments, which are all so meaningful!

> "Dr. Eliahu Weinstein, former publisher of the Czernowitzer Morgenblat, a
> German language Jewish newspaper, who arrived in Palestine two weeks ago
> after a danger fraught voyage across Rumania and the Black Sea to Turkey
> told correspondents that of the 250,000 or 300,000 Jews who lived in
