This thread is too long...so this is my valedictory! Serah...you live in
Sydney. When I arrived and went to Daceyville school followed by Randwick
High I went through all the phases of being a "bloody reffo" as European
refugees were called.and occasionally it was "Jewish reffo". It all lasted
till in High School I had a huge fight with a kid from England name of
Connolly..he came home with no shirt and I came home with a black eye and no
shirt sleeves...and after that no more namecalling!! And the comment that"I
know the Ukrainians" reminds me far too much of "I know the Jews" or "it's
those bloody Jews again" when something involving a Jew is reported in the
Press or on radio. I totally accept that there was Ukrainian involvement in
atrocities, but that is not a reason to condemn 100% of a nation.Germany who
were the instigators of all that happened were occupied by 4 Powers. The
restitution etc was in the Western zones. The Eastern soviet-controlled
areas and the Ukraine as part of the Soviet sphere ignored it all. In Latvia
they still have an annual celebration for those who joined the SS!!
Czernowitz had a street parade to celebrate the reopening of a rebuilt Shul.
And that is it from me! Cornel

To Cornel,
And who were the guards in Babi Yar?
Did you read the book "Schindlers List", specifically the chapters
describing the role of Ukrainians in the extermination of ghetto Krakow?
About blaming the whole nation: Germany took responsibility for their crimes
and is still paying restitution. But Ukrainians and Lithuanians skilfully
deny their involvement.
The hatred did not happened in a distant past. Both myself and Greg, people
who lived in Cz in the 70s and 80s reported instances of open hatred.
To Mimi,
There is an unwritten law: No Jews-No anti-Semitism!
This reminds me of what's happening in today's Poland: first they got rid
of 3 million Jews and now they have a Yiddish theatre, klezmer music and
Jewish food in their restaurants. Is there anyone who is able to explain
this bizarre phenomena?
Serah
