Zev, once again you have precisely nailed the issue. In addition, your
comment "if someone is not interested in one or other thread or finds it not
to his or her taste, they are free to fast forward" is a fair rebuttal to
Mr. Hauster's comment of today stating "I'm very doubtful that the silent
majority of our group will be amused and/or motivated by such a persisitent
thread, going round in circles and reminding me of bygone (kindergarten)
times". As to Mr. Hauster's furthur statement that "Moderation is not
censorship". Mr Hauster is technically correct although I would state
instead that while moderation should not be censorship, it can become so if
the moderator is biased on one issue or another and prevents the expression
of an opposing view. The major difference between a censor and a moderator
is that a moderator guides participation prior to having to uphold any
moderation guidelines (rules) and also attempts to prevent a problem before
it happens by creating an environment within which guidelines are implicitly
invoked through the moderator's own active interest and engagement, whereas
in the area of censorship, a work is created (e.g. a film) and then censors
act on it in relation to their own guidelines, either banning the work or
rating it accordingly. The censor does not participate in the creation of
the work or provide advice nor guide the creative process according to those
(the moderator's) guidelines.
I think a better understanding of the moderator's action would best be
served if Hardy's post(s), which the moderator(s) determined to contain
offensive language or were off topic, be posted to the List with an
explanation by the moderator(s) as to why they came to those conclusions.
This could serve as a useful guideline or rule for the List members to
follow.
