Pessach,
You and Christian are right that the actions of one person should not
indict
a whole group. If Josef Burg is indeed from Czernowitz, we
Czernowitzers,
or the Jewish people are not necessarily to be painted by the same
brush.
On the issue of whether the Jewish Agency, the internal government
of the Jews in Palestine, had enough money or were willing to spend it
to rescue the Jews of Europe, I would like to see more source material.
While it is possible that this is actually what happened, I find it
hard to believe.
After all, the Jews living in Palestine in 1941 - 1944 did have close
relatives
in central and eastern Europe. In 1943 and 1944 ships were rented
to evacuate Jews from Europe.
What may have influenced J. Burg to be so anti Israeli, is that at
the time
he immigrated to Israel, there were many conflicts between the "Vatikim"
( veteran Jewish inhabitants) and "Olim Chadashim" (new immigrants).
The Vatikim were used to harsh living conditions and a majority of them
were Socialists. The Olim Chadashim had suffered a lot and hoped
for a better life. They had experienced Communism and therefore
were very much against Socialism.
The Vatikim thought: If all Jews would have been Zionists and moved
to Palestine, they would not have been exposed to the Holocaust.
The Olim thought: This country is run like an Oligarchy, this is not
what
I came here for.
