Hi Mimi,

this issue is still very controversial, there is a large body of
literature with very different interpretations and pronouncements. A
good example of a view highly critical of the Yishuv leaders is Tom
Segev's book "The Seventh Million: The Israelis and the Holocaust"
(Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1994). A thoroughly researched and
documented monograph "Arrows in the Dark: David Ben-Gurion, the Yishuv
Leadership, and Rescue Attempts during the Holocaust" by Tuvia Friling
( Univ of Wisconsin Press, 2005) presents a much more balanced
picture.

One of the best sources on the rescue attempts of Transnistria Jews is
a paper by Dina Porat "The Transnistria Affair and the Rescue Policy
of the Zionist Leadership in Palestine, 1942–1943" (Studies in
Zionism, 1985, vol 6, p. 27–52).

I don't remember if it was posted to this list before, but here is the
almost a full-page ad by Ben Hecht and his "Committee for a Jewish
Army" published in New York Times in 1943 for a fundraising to ransom
Romanian Jews from Transnistria (they did not raise much, and in this
particular case it was not a fault of the State Department):
