Carte de mester
From Catherine Herbst:
“Carte de mester” (1937) of my grandmother, Maria Nagelberg, wife of Emil Herbst. Her husband was a mathematics teacher in Czernowitz. Their children, my father, Gedeon (1909) and his brother Carol (1922) were born in Czenowitz.
I wonder what the proper English translation of ‘Carte de mester’ would be? What other information is on this card?

Myrrh in Jewish Weddings
Below is a wedding photo of my maternal grandparents Robert and Cecilie Oling who married in April 1908. Cilli has leaves adorning her veil and Robert has matching greenery in his lapel. I would be interested to know more about the significance of myrrh (if that is what it is) in Jewish weddings.

the ORT in Bukovina and Bessarabia
In my Inbox this morning was an email from one Alexandra Nichitean with two photos and a link. Both photos are presumably from the ORT in Czernowitz. The one of the girls on the steps we have posted before, but the Chess game photo is new: Perhaps someone can identify people in this photo?
