1919 Historical Documents in German

I received an email from List member Alex Denisenko, who sent along what looks like some interesting documents from 1919 Czernowitz/Sadagora :

These are scans of documents of American shipping company that operated in Czernowitz.
Do you know anything more about its operation? They might be of interest to CZ group members.

To the best of my knowledge the company’s office was housed in the beginning of Synagogegasse, in the house that was nick named “Canada”.

I made a pdf of the documents so you can access them and be able to magnify them, etc. The question is (because I am Germanically challenged), is: What significance would these documents be to researchers, and if appropriate, would the ‘Stories, Histories, Documents’ section on our Website be a good home for them? A summary of what the documents are about, not an exact translation, is what I need. Are all the pages of this correspondence connected? And does anyone know any more about the shipping company?

Which one is Prof. Moshe Weisinger?

In this group photograph I am trying to figure out which gentleman is Prof.
Moshe Weisinger. It is so hard to see the rows. Does anyone know by chance
which one is Prof Moshe Weisinger? I am sure he is one of my relatives.
Moshe Weisinger was also my grandfather’s name and he left Czernowitz in 1907
to come to NY. My great-grandfather Zallel (Charles) Weisinger died in
Czernowitz about 1920 or 1921 I think.

Stairway to the Prut

Here is the staircase to heaven by the Prut. That’s me looking disgruntled in the foreground. The lady directly behind me is Dr. Frankel’s wife. The others I don’t remember. The stairs faced the river. They must have once led to some sort of larger perhaps industrial structure. If a list member recognizes it and actually knows the story behind it we’ll clear up an 80 year old mystery. Imagine that kind of structure left by a beach today. You would have safety commissions screaming, a railing would have to be built, on and on.

And if Hitler hadn’t been born I’d still be swimming in the Prut singing Alunelu, Alunelu, hai la joc.

Jacob Drucker

The photo comes from Rachel Leigh the daughter of Jacob Drucker – creator of the famed list of Mogilev burials.

Jacob Drucker was responsible for burying the dead at the Mogilev labor camp in Transnistria. He courageously organized the creation of a burial list and map to the cemetery, with both names and villages of origin in Bukovina and Bessarabia. Thanks to his efforts, most of the dead will not be forgotten. The documents in his possession after the war were refused by Yad Vashem, which showed little interest. Let’s pay homage to this great and courageous individual, Mr. Jacob Drucker, so that his name will stay forever in our memories.

Identify these folks for Andy Halmay

I found this very bright and clear snapshot (attached) of my late uncle Julius Gutmann with a group of happy looking people in 1943. To the best of my recollection, he and my aunt Hilda and cousin Turi together with 40 other Jewish families from Cz or Bukovina traded all their belongings for a ship which they intended to sail to Palestine. I believe this was in 1940.

The ship was not seaworthy and went down off Turkey but no lives were lost and they ended up in a British camp on Cyprus which, apparently, they thoroughly enjoyed.

I am not clear on when they made it to Israel. This picture was taken in Pedoulas, Cyprus. The text is from the back of the snapshot. He mentions some names that are not familiar to me which would have been known by my parents thus I presume they were Czernowitzers.

I would like our group to check the faces to see if anyone recognizes anyone.

Semi-monthly journal of the Cernautian school of painting

This came from List Member Daniel Dubowy… It is a pdf of something his father did in 1924 in Czernowitz when he was 16 years old.

Daniel explains:

Hi Jerome,

My German is not very good either, I used Google Translate for the
title: semi-monthly journal of the Cernautian school of painting. In
1924 my father was 16 years old, I don’t know if such a school really
existed but I suspect this was a fictitious name for a group of students
with artisitic talents in the school who wrote this journal by hand. My
father *Erich Dubowy has a few drawings inside.
