Jewish Life in Radautz Before, During and After the Holocaust
The working team “War Graves”, founded by Petra and Holger Klawitter at the European School Rövershagen implemented the project “Jewish Life in Radautz Before, During and After the Holocaust” in close cooperation with the Andronic Motrescu College from Rădăuți. On July 4, 2017 I had the privilege to meet Petra, Holger and a few of their pupils in Rövershagen close to the Hanseatic City of Rostock.
The outstanding gifted and dedicated couple, both of them history teachers at the European School Rövershagen, not only founded the working team itself but also erected the rewarded “Holocaust Memorial Railway Wagon” on the school campus. For the implementation of the ongoing project, in March 2017, a small advance team conducted interviews with Holocaust survivors from Rădăuți in Israel. On July 6, 2017 the entire working team set forth on their journey (by bus) to Rădăuți.
In Rădăuți they joined their Romanian counterparts and the entrire working team – assisted by Bondy and Sidi Stenzler (rear row, 2nd and 3rd from left) set to work. Over the course of this very complex biennial project different suboperations will be effected, such as research works at the archives, interviews with the local population, maintenance works at the Jewish Cemetery, installation of a memorial plate inside of the Temple, presentation of a photo exhibition, printing of a comprehensive bilingual brochure in German and Romanian, and much more.

Memorials in Israel
Several cemeteries in Israel include memorials to the holocaust often related to individual towns or regions of Europe. A number of years ago, I visited such a memorial to the Jewish community of Radautz, Bukovina.

The Radautz Vital Records Index Database 1857 – 1929
During the summer of 2016, I traveled to Rădăuţi, Romania, and visited the Archives in the Town Hall. After some negotiations and with a little bit of luck, I was given permission to photograph Jewish vital records for the Rădăuţi, Solca, and Vicov communities of Bukovina; see my blog posting “Books of Seven Seals in Rădăuți and Suceava”. The first database resulting from these efforts is The Radautz Marriage Index Database.
Every society enlarges itself through marriages. When you are tracing your family history, this information can offer one of the most common missing links – a maiden name. All marriage records include the full names of the bride and groom as well as the marriage date and other additional information, such as the names and birthplaces of each individual’s parents. As part ONE of an ongoing project – birth & death records will come soon – The Radautz Marriage Index Database is a rich web resource for Jewish heritage in Bukovina. It contains over 3,000 properly indexed marriage records for the period 1870-1929. Copies of family marriage records are freely available upon request.
NEW: Even if final, but not trivial at all, death records are among the most important of all vital records. Death Indices typically contain the birth date of a person, date of death, cause of death and other details that are helpful in genealogical and historical research. As part TWO of our ongoing project, The Radautz Death Index Database is a rich web resource for Jewish heritage in Bukovina. It contains over 7,500 properly indexed death records for the period 1857-1929; some data refer back to births as early as the middle of the 18th century. Copies of family death records are freely available upon request.
Whether you are looking for an ancestor or trying to find a lost classmate, these records can provide a link to vital information and point you toward important clues. The Osias “Shike” Stenzler Radautz Booklet
“The Osias ‘Shike’ Stenzler Radautz Booklet” is a unique document compiled by Osias Stenzler over about three decades until his death in the year 2008 at the age of 99 years. His memory, unlike his eyesight, never faded, even at an advanced age. After the loss of vision, Osias’ sons Daniel and Bondy kept his records from dictation and so we have the rare opportunity to discover a real treasure chest making alive the Jewish life in post WW2 Radautz. The booklet is headlined “Occupations and Professions Practiced by the Jewish Population of Radautz”, but beyond the long list of names it contains authentic notes and remarks on the Radautz Jewish community.
