Birth Certificate Problem

Czernowitzers… I am in contact with a fellow named Alejandro Kinsbrunner whose grandfather was born in Czernowitz in 1901. Indeed his gf’s birth record has been transcribed and is available through Daniel Horowitz’s database.

The problem is that my correspondent is trying to re-establish his Austrian citizenship, and the Austrian authorities will only take certified proof that the proper documentation exists. He has in his possession a copy 1938 document from the then Romanian govt. to that effect which can’t be used as it is not an ‘original’. I have posted this document on the Blog at: http://ehpes.com/blog1/?p=8321
Is there any way to get an official document from either the Archives or the municipal government to the effect that 1901 birth of this fellow’s gf was properly registered in 1901?

It seems to me likely that others have run into similar problems — so, what to do?

The Lilien/Lilian Family

I am from Johannesburg, South Africa. I am investigating the Lilien/Lilian family who lived in Czernowitz. I have managed to find out the following:

My great grandfathers name was Wilhelm lilian ( must have become William when he arrived in Australia before WW2) – he had 2 brothers – Joseph and Ossies (all born in Czernowitz), their fathers name was Meier. Wilhelm was born in Czernowitz. I have found a picture of Meier Lilian tombstone in Czernowitz cemetary – but it is an unclear photo.

Meier lilian grave

Meier died on 12 July 1926 and is buried in Czernowitz. Wilhelm was born on 17 January 1891 or 1892 and died in Sydney, Australia 13 November 1964.

Does anyone have any further information about the lilian family? or know who would have info? I am also investigating if the lilian family in Czernowitz is related to the famous artist Ephraim Moshe lilien.

Please let me know
Thanks in advance
Danny
